That year, student leaders from across the nation were invited to the White House for briefings about the Carter Administration's proposals on national youth service.After a morning of briefings, we gathered in the East Room. Suddenly, the 39th President of the United States, Jimmy Carter, walked in. There was no "Hail to the Chief," no fanfare—just President Carter, humbly greeting us with, “Thank you for taking time away from your studies, and welcome to the White House.”A receiving line was set up so that each student leader could have a moment with the President while their photo was taken. When my turn came, President Carter looked at my name tag and said, “You’re from Georgia! Hello, Mr. President!” He asked where I was from and then he shared stories about people he knew from Gray. He asked about my studies, mentioned folks from his home county who had attended Mercer, and even inquired about individuals in the university administration, asking me to pass along his regards.The photograph of our meeting nearly 45 years ago has faded, but the memory and its significance for me remain bright. Before I could say, “Hello, Mr. President,” President Carter had already said it to me. That simple act encapsulates the essence of Jimmy Carter—a servant leader, reflecting his faith and the teachings of Jesus as the leader of the free world put a 22-year-old kid above himself.Thank You Mr. President A Prayer for President Carter Heavenly Father, we give thanks for the life of President Jimmy Carter, Your humble servant. His legacy of faith, love, and selfless service has left an indelible mark on the world. We thank You for the way he led with integrity, compassion, and unwavering dedication to others. May his example continue to inspire us to love one another, serve with humility, and walk in faith, as he so faithfully did.
