The&nbsp;<a href="https://github.com/Podcastindex-org/podcast-namespace?ref=blog.getalby.com" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Podcast Namespace</a>&nbsp;along with the&nbsp;<a href="https://podcastindex.org/?ref=blog.getalby.com" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Podcast Index</a> started out as a new project in 2020 to preserve, protect and extend the open, independent podcasting ecosystem. Today it has grown into a whole movement of startup companies incorporating many of the new podcasting 2.0 features (tags) into their business models in order to build new services on top. One key aspect of this new standard is the&nbsp;<a href="https://blog.getalby.com/the-case-for-value-4-value/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Value 4 Value</a>&nbsp;(V4V) system, enabling podcasters to directly receive value payments from their fans in return for the value they provide through their content. Based on the podcast namespace specification, fans have the ability to stream payments, which can be scheduled based on a per-minute model or can be designated for specific moments within an episode, referred to as "boosts". In addition, an increasing number of&nbsp;<a href="https://podcastindex.org/apps?elements=Boostagrams&amp;ref=blog.getalby.com" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Podcasting 2.0 apps</a>&nbsp;allow for brief comments to accompany these boosts, known as "boostagrams". <h3>The Value tag sets the ground for a new monetization model</h3>Up until recently the owner of the RSS feed, i.e. the podcaster, could specify all recipients of V4V payments for a whole episode in the podcast value tag. All incoming payments are split automatically among the recipients according to a defined ratio. But what if the podcast episode contains content from other contributors? This is regularly the case in music shows playing songs from different artists. One single value tag per episode cannot fully respect the split for each of these contributors. <h3>The Value Time Split enables real-time payment attribution</h3>This is where the value time split shines. By adding a time and external content component, this element allows different value splits for a certain period of time by respecting the source. The latest innovation coming out of the Podcasting 2.0 initiative is essentially a combination of existing Podcasting 2.0 features such as <h3>The Value Time Split in use today</h3>Content creators are now able to be compensated as defined within their individual RSS feeds. Podcasts featuring multiple content contributors can now conveniently direct listener payments to the primary content originators, establishing a foundation for an equitable, contribution-driven payment model. The stage is set for music shows to adopt this innovation.&nbsp;The Boostagram Ball&nbsp;by Adam Curry is one example and the first of its kind to allow contributors earn V4V payments from listeners. Adam plays a series of songs, each with its own value tag defined by the artist and creator of the RSS feed.<h3> </h3>By allowing to reference content and value recipients across any podcast, the value time split rethinks content monetization in completely new ways. This innovation empowers music artists and grants them the capacity to receive payments directly into their pockets whenever their content is played on a different podcast, independently of labels and music rights organizations. <h3>Apps for artists and publishers</h3>Setting up an RSS feed for your content is the key component for making it accessible on podcast apps or music players. By adding a&nbsp;digital wallet&nbsp;(i.e. the value tag)&nbsp;you can now receive payments from consumers for songs, podcast episodes, videos or even blog posts thanks to the different&nbsp;medium types&nbsp;specified by the podcast namespace. It's great to see people beginning to talk about how '<a href="https://value4value.info/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">value for value</a>' as a new economic model for the web works. i.e fans can pay creators directly with SAT's. i.e wallet 2 wallet. (W2W) Below is a snippet of the transcript from last week's <a href="https://podfans.fm/shows/buzzcast/64cd1eab86252e56fa42f666?tab=transcript" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Buzzcast</a> where hosts Alban Brooke, Jordan Blair and Tom Rossi discuss Adam Curry's new music podcast - <a href="https://podfans.fm/shows/boostagram-ball" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Boostagram Ball</a>. They also discuss how Podfans is making it super simple for fans to pay creators but also how it enables creators to manage their podcasts, reward other people who help make their podcasts using splits e.g editors, producers and also reward their "superfans" who are most active. <cite>Tom </cite><time>40:48</time>Yeah, one of the things that you can do with the value for value tag in your RSS feed is you can, on an episode by episode level, you can dictate who gets what for that episode. So a musician could, for example, have their music played on his podcast and now whenever anybody streams sats to that particular episode, they're listening to it really. Then that content creator gets paid for it. You can boost it. I really like this song. You can boost it so he can highlight musicians, and the musicians can get paid for their work, which is really difficult to do outside of some type of micropayment solution like what we've done with value for value. So that's one application of it, but they want to expand it so that any band could go create an RSS feed with their music and they could distribute it to their fans, and now whenever they release a song, they're just getting paid based on the sats that are getting streamed to them. <cite>Jordan </cite><time>41:38</time>That's exactly what Sam Sethi is doing with Podfans. He's making it easy for people to set up that split. You can do it by episode. He showed this to me and I was just fascinated by it. I could literally split up the income that I get with my editor so she could get a share of it. I could split it with the people whose soundtrack I use throughout my episode and I could split with those musicians and he also had it so I could set up to split with my super fans and sort of gamify that support. Yeah. <cite>Alban </cite><time>42:12</time>I'm thinking now it sounds like oh, what's in it for the artist to not work with a label and not get paid for their music in the traditional way and instead just kind of release it almost for free and just hope that people will give money back. But this has been around for nearly 20 years now. I remember I think the first band to do this was probably Radiohead with an album called In Rainbows, and they just put it online and said there you go, take it and pay what you want. I don't know. I mean, Tom, you've probably seen this at like Christian concerts, maybe back in the 2000s, like they have the CDs out there and they'd be like pay what you think is appropriate, we just want you to have it if you want the music. And more and more bands are doing it and I think the reason they do it is because they make so much little money on the actual sale of the CDs. Now when it was CDs they did, but now the streams they're making so little. They're like I make all the money on the tours and the merch anyway, like I might as well just give this part away for free and then monetize the real monetization side. So you know, I could see it working. It's cool, it's a fun way to do it and I just commend Adam again for like going on this limb. I think I would not have the patience to be like I'm going to do a radio show podcast where I do music, I kind of play the DJ and I only pick music that's submitted through these you know new directories. There's no way I could do that and not do it well, but also <cite>Alban </cite><time>43:39</time>I'd have the patience. So it's very cool to see him blazing this new trail again. <cite>Tom </cite><time>43:44</time>Yeah, right, that's what's funny. It's the new trail again, right that he's doing something similar to what he? Did with. Headbangers Ball, yeah, but now he's doing it in a whole new medium. Going back to Podfans too, I think what Podfans is doing is really cool as well, because they're bridging the gap from both sides of making it so that it's good for Jordan to be able to go in and manage her podcast, but it's also good for listeners, and so listeners can go in and support podcasts. Simply making that transaction it's just so hard. I mean, Fountain is probably the most mature in terms of streaming sat and taking advantage of podcasting 2.0 stuff, but it's still pretty daunting. And so Podfans and what Sam's doing will hopefully be the next iteration of continuing to try and make it easier and attract different audience. That maybe wouldn't do something like Fountain, but they might do Podfans. <cite>Jordan </cite><time>44:31</time>Yeah, I'm somebody who gets easily daunted by these new concepts and learning new ones. I mean, look at me with Twitter slash X. I struggle so hard on that platform. Rob Greenlee and Sam Sethi have an in-depth discussion about new monetization models for podcasting, including micropayments, the value-for-value model, and using satoshis. They talk about platforms like Podfans that allow listeners to support shows via small payments, as well as broader industry initiatives like Podcasting 2.0. Sam gives an overview of the value-for-value concept – podcasters set a value for their content, and listeners can pay that amount or adjust it up or down depending on what they feel the content is worth. This is facilitated by micropayments using Bitcoin’s smallest unit, satoshis. Sam explains how his platform Podfans implements value for value using satoshi micropayments. Listeners pay per minute as they listen to episodes, rather than a flat subscription fee upfront. This gives listeners more control and transparency over what they pay. They discuss some of the challenges around getting people used to using digital wallets and transacting in satoshis. The process can still be complex for average listeners. However, Sam argues that with time and exposure, satoshi micropayments can become as ubiquitous as sending an email. Rob and Sam explore how value for value relates to Bitcoin and some of the controversy around cryptocurrencies. They agree there is still friction from governments who may see Bitcoin as a threat to state-controlled currencies and transactions. The conversation shifts to how the podcasting industry can better market these new standards like Podcasting 2.0 namespaces. Sam argues the Podcast Standards Project needs more momentum and leadership to drive adoption. He suggests versioning namespaces like “2.0, 2.01, 2.02” as a way to differentiate apps supporting the newest standards. They discuss whether big platforms like Twitter could potentially accelerate adoption if they build in support for micropayments and podcasting standards into their apps. Overall the episode covers the promise but also the difficulties around getting micropayments and value-for-value models adopted at scale across the podcast industry.
